Ladakh is a high-altitude cold desert. The sun is harsh, the air is bone-dry, and outside Leh the infrastructure is basic.
Most people pack for Ladakh the same way: heavy jacket, thick socks, gloves. All essential. But these five things rarely make the standard list, and each one will save your trip.
1. A postpaid SIM (BSNL or Jio)
Prepaid cards from outside Jammu & Kashmir simply do not work here. Beyond Leh, Airtel fades; Jio and BSNL are your best bet for staying reachable in Nubra or Pangong.
2. Cash, in small notes
Digital payments are fine in Leh market, but once you are on the mountain roads the signal (and UPI with it) disappears. Homestays, roadside dhabas and checkpoint drivers deal in cash. Keep small notes in your daypack.
3. High-SPF sunscreen and a heavy lip balm
Thinner air means less atmosphere to filter the UV. Skip sunscreen and you will burn or crack within a couple of hours. Choose a rich, petroleum or ghee-based lip balm; ordinary ones dry out almost at once.
4. A sturdy thermos flask
Cold water is hard on a stomach adjusting to altitude. A flask of warm water from your hotel keeps your core temperature steady across windy passes like Chang La.
5. Modest layers for the monasteries
These are living, centuries-old places of worship. Shorts and sleeveless tops are not allowed in the prayer halls, so carry a light scarf or jacket to slip on before you step inside.
Packing is the start; a plan that knows the terrain is what makes the difference.
