Camel Expedition was founded in Leh, Ladakh — not in a city office or a boardroom, but at the base of a mountain, with a cup of butter tea and a lifetime of local knowledge.
Camel Expedition was created because we believed something was missing in Himalayan travel — the depth, the stillness, and the genuine encounter with a place that most visitors only glimpse from a bus window or a crowded monastery courtyard.
We are Ladakhi-led. Our founders, guides, and naturalists grew up in these valleys, learned to read weather from the behaviour of yaks, and know the exact ridge where the snow leopard has denned for the past three winters. That knowledge cannot be found in a guidebook. It is inherited.
Over fourteen years, we have designed journeys for wildlife photographers, cultural scholars, families, honeymooners, solo explorers, and seasoned expedition travellers from around the world. Each journey has been entirely private. Each has been entirely different. Each has left its guests changed in some small and important way.
"We do not sell trips. We design conversations between people and one of the world's last truly wild landscapes."
Camel Expedition crafts journeys that reveal Ladakh beyond the ordinary — through remote landscapes, living cultures, and authentic experiences guided by deep local knowledge. We are not a travel agency. We are a team of people who fell in love with these mountains and decided to share them — carefully, responsibly, and beautifully.
The finest journeys are not measured in kilometres covered or monasteries visited. They are measured in moments of genuine encounter — with the land, the culture, and yourself.
Every journey is guided by people who were born and raised in Ladakh. Local knowledge is not a feature — it is the foundation of everything we do.
We limit group sizes, support local communities, employ local guides exclusively, and design experiences that protect the landscapes and cultures they explore.
We are meticulous about every detail — the guides we select, the stays we recommend, the timing of each day. Luxury in the wilderness is not comfort. It is precision.
We create genuine encounters with Ladakhi people, not performances. Every farmstay, village visit, and cultural experience is built on real relationships and mutual respect.
We are active supporters of snow leopard conservation and Himalayan wildlife protection. A portion of every expedition contribution funds local conservation initiatives.
We actively seek the off-map, the undiscovered, the less-travelled. We will never put you on a route that every other company offers. That is a promise.
Camel Expedition is led by four Ladakhis who, between them, hold its culture, its stays and cuisine, its high mountains, and the quiet work that makes every journey effortless.
Culture & Heritage · Monastery Guide
Stanzin Tsewang designs our cultural and heritage journeys with an insider's intimacy — reading a mural, a ceremony or a monk's morning ritual for the meaning most visitors walk past. He guides in Spanish as fluently as in Ladakhi, opening these traditions to travellers who thought they would need a translator to truly understand them.
Curated Stays & Cuisine
Where you sleep and what you eat can make a journey, and Stanzin Odsal treats both as an art. From boutique hotels and heritage homes to a farmstay where the barley grows just beyond the door, he chooses every stay himself. At the table he brings out the real Ladakh — tsampa, thukpa, skyu, butter tea and seasonal Himalayan produce — prepared with generations of knowledge and served with a family's warmth.
Treks, Biking & Exploration
Stanzin Gyurmet lives for the off-map. He leads our treks and mountain-biking journeys along ancient trade routes and forgotten passes — the valleys with no phone signal, no other trekkers, only herders' stone shelters and a sky thick with stars. If a place is rarely walked and even more rarely ridden, he has almost certainly been there first.
Operations & Guest Experience
Padma Thinles is the reason a Camel Expedition journey feels effortless. Permits, transfers, timing — the quiet logistics of moving through remote Ladakh. He handles all of it before you ever notice it needed handling. Nothing reaches our guests until it meets his standard, and that standard is exacting.
Whether you know exactly what you want or simply know that you want something extraordinary — reach out. We'll take it from there.
