It is a taste of Baltistan, and of a culture only a fortunate few will ever share.

In Nubra, pale sand dunes roll improbably between snow-capped mountains. We lay a private Ladakhi picnic among the dunes at Hunder, with rugs and cushions on the warm sand, a spread of local dishes, and the double-humped camels passing in the distance. As the afternoon light turns the dunes to gold, it becomes a picnic you will never forget.

You begin in the garden and the fields, gathering the vegetables and herbs of the season with a local family, then carry them into the kitchen to make mok mok — the Ladakhi momo — learning the dough, the filling and the pleat before steaming a basket to share. Playful, hands-on and deeply satisfying, it joins the land, the kitchen and the table in a single afternoon.
