I didn't come to Ladakh for the birds, but that is exactly what made me fall in love with it.

Somewhere between the stillness of Tso Moriri and the endless skies of Changthang, I found a world alive with wings. If you are looking for a Ladakh birding journey that goes beyond the ordinary, this is it.

Why this journey is different

This is not a crowded group tour. It is a slow, immersive, expert-led birding journey for travellers who want something real — private, small-group experiences led by expert local birding guides, along handpicked routes across Changthang and Tso Moriri, at a flexible pace made for photography and patient observation, and travelled sustainably, with a low footprint.

What you'll experience

Rare high-altitude birds are the heart of it: the black-necked crane, Himalayan snowcock, Tibetan sandgrouse and the great lammergeier overhead, across a remarkable range of birding country.

The wetlands of Tso Moriri and Tso Kar are prime migratory zones. The Changthang plateau is remote, untouched birding country. The Hanle valley offers silence, space and rare sightings. And closer to Leh, the Indus around Shey and Spituk gives a short, rewarding session when time is tight.

If you do not have time for a full expedition, we also run half-day and single-day birding outings along the Indus at Shey and Spituk, minutes from Leh.

The moment that stays with you

There is always one moment. For me it was a pair of black-necked cranes rising from the Changthang wetlands — silent, unhurried, unforgettable. That is what a true Changthang birding day feels like.

Best time to visit

May to July is the breeding season and the best time for rare sightings. August to September brings the migratory peak. And every day, the early mornings and evenings offer the most activity.

Who it's for

It is made for wildlife photographers, serious birders, nature lovers seeking something unusual, and travellers who want the offbeat side of Ladakh.

A sample five to seven day journey

A typical journey runs five to seven days: the first two in Leh, acclimatising and birding the Indus Valley; the next two at the Tso Moriri wetlands; then two on the Changthang birding expedition; and a final day for a scenic return, with an optional Nubra extension. It is fully customisable around your birding goals.

We do not simply run tours; we craft experiences — with deep local roots, an ecological eye and a love of slow travel.

Come for the mountains. Stay for the silence. Leave with a story written in wings.
